King John's House

This is not a comprehensive list but draws upon Le Schonix, the Cambridge University Library catalogue of the second collection and the Pitt-Rivers' private family art catalogue. It is all the art works and objets d'art known to have been exhibited to the public at the Pitt-Rivers Museum at some point. It is known that Pitt-Rivers caused the pictures at King John’s House to be hung in chronological order, but it is not possible to say exactly what this order was today. The following list is probably not in the order that they were displayed.

Paintings

1. Egyptian paintings of mummy heads of the twentieth and twenty-sixth dynasties (B.C. 1200-528), and one of the first century A.D. [Le Schonix][unknown number of paintings] This is probably the one listed in the Pitt-Rivers family art catalogue as ‘Portrait of a young boy discovered by Mr Flinders Petrie, in 1887, in the Labyrinth, Fayum, Egypt. It is designed on a panel of cedar in coloured wax, and is probably of Graeco-Roman or Graeco-Egyptian workmanship, and of the 1st or 2nd Century A.D. It is figured and described in Miss Amelia Edwards's "Pharoahs, Fellahs & Explorers," p. 111, where it is erroneously stated to be in the British Museum, but it was purchased of Mr Petrie by General Rivers in 1889. It represents the first transition in Egypt from painting on the round upon flexible canvas, covering the face of a mummy and displaying the features of the deceased, to painting on the flat, in which the form of the features is represented by shading. The painted panel was stuck into the mummy in the place where the painted head covering existed in the earlier mummies. It is placed in this series of paintings to show the perfection to which the art of portrait painting had attained previously to the decline of the ancient civilization. 1st or 2nd century, A.D.’ It is Add.9455vol2_p444 /11, described as 'July 1888 Bought of Mr Flinders Petrie the following objects found by him in explorations in Egypt  ... Portrait on wood of ancient Egyptian in oak frame grey mount ', bought in 1888 for £18.0.0. [In the catalogue of the second collection]

8. ‘S. Memmi, school of Siena, 1283’ [Le Schonix] Actually ‘The Mystic Marriage of Saint Catherine with angels’ by the Master of San Jacopo. Purchased by Pitt-Rivers on 6 July 1889 from a sale of art from M. Colnaghi’s collection at Christie’s, London. It was sold by George Pitt-Rivers in 1929. These appear to be two copies from Garden of Earthly delights, another named Orpheus and the Beasts, and the Dream of St Anthony [PR family art catalogue]

18-19. 'a Banker and his Wife, and the Prodigal Son, by Quentin Matsys (1466-1531)' [Le Schonix]  The Banker and his wife is Add.9455vol2_p134 /1, the other is not listed in the catalogue of the second collection.

20-21. 'two of the school of Holbein (1493-1554)' [Le Schonix], The Pitt-Rivers family catalogue suggests that these 2 images were portraits of 'A Lady' and Jane Seymour.

22. 'Modesty and Vanity, by Luini (1460-1530)' [Le Schonix]. Different versions of the painting are called ‘The Conversion of the Magdalen’.

23. '... the Resurrection and Judgement, circa 1480' [Le Schonix]. Described in the Pitt-Rivers family art catalogue as ‘The Resurrection and Judgment [sic], Early Italian School Date: circa 1480’.

29. '... one of Roselli, school of Florence (1578-1651)' [Le Schonix]. Showed the Virgin, Child and angels, the Pitt-Rivers family art catalogue makes it clear that it was attributed to Cosimo Rosselli, (1439- after 1506).

30. 'Paying Tithes, by P. Brueghel the elder (1530-69)' [Le Schonix]. There are many versions of this painting in existence which is in fact by Pieter Bruegel the younger (1564-1637/8)

31. '... a Martyrdom, German school, circa 1500' [Le Schonix]. Possibly Add.9455vol1_p55 /3. If match correct then this item was acquired before 1884, and displayed at South Kensington Museum with the founding collection.

32 and 33. '... a Descent into Hell, and an Ascent into Heaven, by Frans Floris (1517-70)'. Add.9455vol2_p138 /6 said by catalogue of second collection to be by Jean Cousin.

34.  '... the Miracle of the Slave, by Tintoretto (1517-94)' [Le Schonix] The Pitt-Rivers family art catalogue suggests it was a study for the painting now held in the Gallerie dell'Accademia in Venice.
