The sale on 1-2 May 1871 was described in its frontispiece as

'Catalogue of  Roman, Saxon, Irish and other Antiquities, bijouterie in gold and silver the property of William C. Neligan .... many of the articles are from the celebrated Collections of General Cesnola, Captain Murchison, Mr Lindsay, Mr Sainthill, Mr Purnell and other well known collectors ... which will be sold at auction by Messrs Sotheby, Wilkinson and Hodge ... On Monday the 8th of April 1878 and following Day at One O'Clock precisely.

The copy of the annotated auctioneer's sale catalogue to which the researcher had access did not list any items sold to Fox, but it appears to be incomplete. The specific section which contained items from Cesnola's collection is entitled 'The following three lots are from excavations in the Island of Cyprus by Gen. de Cesnola'.
